December 8: [fic] wait

Length: 100 words
Content note: Injury detail

wait

It’s not easy to wait.

The bullets have torn holes in Nicky’s cheek and lip. Blood streaks his face, running from his temple into the corner of his open, staring eye. Slashes from a knife mar the skin on his wrist and forearm; he’s missing a finger. Joe remembers with piercing clarity how much it will hurt to grow that back.

Their enemies are corpses. Andy is bleeding, which twists Joe’s guts these days, but she’s alive. Nile is dead, too, but she won’t be long.

“Nicolo,” he breathes, “wake up.”

Ten seconds. Joe counts them.

Nicky opens his eyes.

Gut punch and – such relief. Those moments of waiting must be the worse. Thank you!

Oh, that was nice. I wonder if the waiting just got that much more scarier now that Andy has suddenly turned mortal.

Your writing has a great rhythm to it. I especially love the effect of the last sentence.
